The Ascension Eagles Cheerleaders were able to head to Florida for the US Nfinity Finals thanks to the support of City Aiport. My office made introductions between Angela from Ascension Eagles and City Airport, the Airport was then able to partly sponsor the team’s trip to the US.
In July 2024 the Ascension Eagles won a National Championship here in the UK which gave them the opportunity to compete in the US Nfinity Finals in May 2025. The event was held in Orlando Florida and saw teams from all over the world competing. After two solid performances our team of 17 athletes aged 9-12 walked away with 1st place.
The Ascension Eagles should be so proud of their achievements and I thank City Airport for helping to give them the opportunity to succeed.
I shared the good news in the House of Commons and drew attention to cheerleading as grass roots sport:
The Ascension Eagles cheerleading team of Silvertown have just returned triumphant from an important event in Florida. As a sports fan, Mr Speaker, you will know that almost 100,000 people take part in cheerleading now. It has recently been recognised by Sport England, but it often goes unrecognised by the wider public. Does the Leader of the House agree that we need to do more to shine a light on grassroots sports that often do not get recognition? Will she start today by congratulating the Ascension Eagles on their success in showing the Americans what talent the girls and boys of east London have?
I will continue to ‘cheer on’ the Ascension Eagles in whatever way I can!
